Glistening (2020)

Program Note When my friend Helen Cho, a student with me at Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music, asked me for a two-minute solo piece for her junior recital, I immediately had the idea for something shimmering and sparkling. She said her recital’s theme would be related to winter, so I titled the resulting piece “Glistening,” remembering how sunlight would dance atop the fallen snow on a cloudless winter day back home in Wisconsin. Glistening is in three sections: first, a hesitating introduction emerges around the pitch A; second, a warped phrase evolves into a decisive rhythmic theme; finally, a quietly ecstatic arpeggiated tune bounds joyfully to the piece’s conclusion. —Jacob Beranek |
